The concept that the world IS by definition fair (as opposed to the belief that we SHOULD behave more fairly) tends to promote the status quo.

The victor must have deserved to win, according to this view. His methods (including the seemingly dishonest ones) were rewarded by an intrinsically fair universe after all.
